  Asian Wasps
Asian Wasps / Velutina
The Asian Wasp, or Velutina is a large wasp. The head is black with orange / yellowish face. The body is dark brown or black, velvety, bounded by a thin yellow band with a single yellowish-orange abdominal segment, making it difficult to confuse it with any other species. The wings are dark and the brown legs with yellow ends giving rise to the designation of yellow-legged wasp.

The nests, made up of chewed cellulose fibers, have a round or pear shape with an opening similar to a side outlet, can reach one meter in height and about 50-80 cm in diameter, and are usually built on trees with heights exceeding 5 meters. It is an Asian species with a natural range extending through the tropical and subtropical regions of northern India to eastern China, Indochina and the Indonesian archipelago.

In Europe this species spread rapidly throughout France following its unintended introduction in 2004, and its presence was confirmed in Spain in 2010, Portugal and Belgium in 2011 and Italy in late 2012.

Major Risks Associated with Asian Wasps

The main known impact of this species is the predation of bees. Given its breeding strategy, which is characterized by a more aggressive breeding system than other similar species and high spreading capacity, the presence of the Asian Wasp poses a risk to beekeeping having a direct effect due to the casualties produced by direct predation, and indirectly, by the reduction of bee activities in the presence of the Asian Wasp, which translates into a weakening and final death of the hive.

When disturbed, this species may also pose a risk to people due to its sting, as with other wasps and bees. Although no more aggressive to humans than the native wasp, it reacts quite aggressively to threats to its nest; in the face of a threat or vibration at 5 meters, a group response occurs that can chase the source of the threat for about 500 meters.

Our method

Truly Nolen has developed its own engineering and robotics-based Asian wasp control method, a solution that has been shown to be very effective, putting aside ineffective methods such as burning or gross destruction of the nest.

In partnership with the Civil Protection, Municipalities and Parish Councils, an excellent joint work has been developed in order to dispel the largest number of nests that will be installed in larger quantities in mainland Portugal.
